Local area actors residing within 50 miles of New Canaan are strongly encouraged to audition.

Prepare two contrasting song cuts (16 or 32 bars preferred) in the style of the musical Kiss Me Kate.
Be prepared to read, sides provided at audition if asked to read. Bring picture and resume.

Performances under an open-air state of the art tent theatre with 200+ seats and 60' stage.
Contract for 8 weeks (3.5 weeks rehearsal & 4.5 weeks of performances Thursday - Sunday.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

Actor/Singers and Singer/Dancers: Please prepare two contrasting songs in the style of the show(s) auditoning for, accompanists provided, bring music in correct key. Sides will be provided should you be asked to read. Dance auditions (if called back to dance) will be held Tuesday between 10am & 2pm. 

Note: No housing is provided for actors (except short turn arounds during technical rehearsals) We only cast Equity performers who live within 50 miles and others within reasonable commuting distance. The theatre provides train tansportation (approximately 60-70 minutes from Grand Central) for NYC  area actors..  

Our college summer internship program is available for 5 actors. These actors are cast in our TYA show and may understudy roles in both Kiss Me Kate and other TYA shows. (EMC credits are available). If interested you may apply online prior to attending audtions (recommended)  Also, 6 technical, two costume, two stagemanagment and two administration interns positions are to be filled for the season. click here for more info about the internship program

Cast Breakdowns  

Kiss Me Kate Cast Breakdown

Fred Graham (Petruchio)—30-50, strong baritone, commanding presence. He is actor, director and producer of the play within the play The Shrew and plays Petruchio—he has the lion’s share of Shakespearean dialogue. He is also Lilli’s ex-husband.

Lilli Vanessi (Katherine)—30-50, strong mezzo soprano. She is an actress of stage and screen, proud, haughty, much like her character Katherine in The Shrew, but also vulnerable. Ex- wife of Fred and engaged to Harrison Howell.

Lois Lane (Bianca)—20-30, strong mezzo belter. She is an actress, the quintessential airhead ingénue but with lots of charisma and charm. She also plays Bianca in The Shrew. Good Dancer.

Bill Calhoun (Lucentio)—20-30, strong tenor or baritenor. He is a ne’er-do-well actor who has a bit of a gambling problem. Is a Broadway hoofer, so he should move well. He also plays Lucentio in The Shrew. Excellent Dancer.

First Man (Gangster)—30-50+ comic baritone or tenor. He is the archetypical gangster complete with accent. Does some soft shoe in “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” so should move well. Also appears in The Shrew as half the donkey.

Second Man (Gangster)—Qualities the same as the First Man, but a bit more reserved and dryer of wit. Also appears in The Shrew as half the donkey.

Hattie—Any age. She is Lilli’s dresser and sings ”Another Op’nin’, Another Show and sings in “Too Darn Hot”. Should be a great singer and dancer.

Paul—Any age, tenor or baritenor. He is Fred’s dresser and is the featured singer/dancer in “Too Darn Hot”. Should be a great singer and dancer.

General Harrison Howell—50+, career military officer, politician and he is engaged to Lilli Vanessi. Good Singer.

Gremio and Hortensio—Any age, tenor or baritenor. Actors who appear in The Shrew. They will also sing in the ensemble of both The Shrew and in “Too Darn Hot”. Both are featured in several numbers and should sing & dance well.


Pops (Stage Doorman) — ensemble; doubles as Padua Priest

Ralph (Stage Manager) — ensemble singer

Dance Captain — doubles as Gregory, servant to Petruchio; ensemble dancer & recorder player

Harry Trevor — a veteran character actor; doubles as Baptista Minola

Stagehand #1 (Electrician & Cab Driver — doubles as Nathaniel, servant to Petruchio, dancer

Stagehand #2 (Assistant Electrician) — doubles as Philip, servant to Petruchio, dancer

Stagehand #3 (Carpenter & Driver for Gen. Howell — doubles as Haberdasher, dancer

Wardrobe Lady — ensemble singer, dancer

Ensemble Singer — part of female quartet for “Bianca”; doubles as Padua Inn Waitress, dancer
