College Internship

Hands-on learning opportunities for college students in the performing arts

Overview

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan offers a professional internship program for career-track theatre arts college students and recent graduates who would like practical experience in their field of interest.  All interns will work side by side with professionals and will actively participate in delivering a professional theatrical season.
All intern candidates must reside within easy commuting distance as housing is not provided.\

Regarding Housing for Interns: 
We hire Interns who reside in the local area and they are responsible for their own transportation to and from the theatre. They also must reside within a reasonable auto commute.

All interns will receive a $300 per week personal expense/travel stipend for the season for participation in this program.

 

Concentrations

We offer internships in the following concentrations:

Acting (8)  – Filled for 2024
We will cast approximately 8 acting interns to perform in our professional Actors Equity Association main stage show – Mary Poppins,  Acting interns will be eligible to join Actors Equity Association following their Internship.  In addition to performing, acting interns assist in our theatre education programs. Actors may also participate in running crew, box office, load-in and strike and marketing during the season. (8 weeks, June 10 – Aug 3)

Directing/Education (1) – Filled for 2024
The directing/education intern will serve as the assistant director with the main stage musical. The directing/ education intern also works with the artistic director and education director assisting with our education programs (DramaRamas, High School Theatre Intensive, and the middle school Jr. Company).  (8 weeks June 10 – Aug 3)

Music Directing  (1) – Filled for 2024
The music directing intern will work closely with our Musical director on our mainstage productions and also play in the show orchestra. This intern will also lead music rehearsals for our education programs. It is essential that our music directing intern be able to play the piano. Also the music directing intern may assist on shows with sound design & audio.  (7 weeks June 10 – Aug 3)

Stage Management (2) – Filled for 2024
Stage manager interns work closely with our equity stage managers on the mainstage production and education programs.  Stage management interns will be eligible to join Actors Equity Association following their Internship. (8 weeks, June 10 – Aug 3)

Costumes/Wardrobe  (2)
We will accept 2 costumes/wardrobe interns. These interns will assist the costume designer/supervisor pulling, measuring, building, fitting, altering and maintaining costumes and wigs for all of our shows. The costume/wardrobe interns will also have run crew responsibilities. These interns must have experience in costume shop stitching as well as costume construction. (8 weeks, June 10 – Aug 3)

Technical Theatre  (6)
(Carpentry, Electrical/Lighting, Sound, Technical Direction, Properties)
Technical interns works closely with our production manager, technical director, designers and stagehands and have run positions for all shows. (5 Weeks, June 28 – Aug 3)

Theatre Administration (3) – Filled for 2024
(Marketing/Social Media, Company Management, Box Office, House Management)
Administrative interns work with the company manager and administrative staff. They will split their time between box office & house management, concession management, social marketing and traditional marketing duties.

Schedule

Interns generally spend about 75% of their time in their chosen career track and will participate in other tracks as opportunities, interests, and schedules dictate. The program has a rolling start determined by disciplines. All Internships run through August 3. Interns typically are engaged 6 days per week.  Daily schedules will fluctuate with assignments.

All interns will receive a $300 per week personal expense/travel stipend for the season for their apprenticeships.

Applicants are asked to submit a letter of recommendation. This letter can be sent via email directly from your reference to: skye.gillespie@stonc.org. Please request they include your name and the word recommendation in the subject line.

Once we have received your completed application (Resume, Picture/Headshot, letter of recommendation, brief letter of your stated field of interest, goals for the internship, plus anything else you would like us to consider) we will email you to confirm that all of your application materials have been received. We will then contact those interns being considered and arrange for an online interview.  Applicants not being considered for this season will also be notified via email.

Non-acting internships are accepted on a rolling basis.

Acting interns:
All applicants must first register online. Actors will be required to submit videos with online links.  Videos need to include; 2 singing cuts (upbeat & ballad), a short monologue, and a dance/movement cut(s) that demonstrates your level of dance or movement. Once we have received your complete application (headshot, resume, recommendation and video links), we will email you to confirm that all of your application materials have been received. Those actors being considered for parts this season will be contacted, interviewed and possibly asked to submit additional video or if convenient attend our NYC auditions.  Applicants not being considered for this season will also be notified via email.
