STONC Internships

Overview

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan offers a professional internship program for career-track theatre arts college students and recent graduates who would like practical experience in their field of interest.  All interns will work side by side with professionals and will actively participate in delivering a professional theatrical season.

Regarding Housing for Interns: 
At this time we cannot offer our intership candidates housing. The theatre company can only hire Interns who reside within a reasonable commute and are responsible for their own transportation to and from the theatre.  When registering, please list the local address where you will be residing and commuting.

All interns will receive a $400 per week personal expense/travel stipend for the season for participation in this program.

 

Concentrations

We offer internships in the following concentrations:

Acting (6)
We will cast approximately 4-6 acting interns to perform in our professional mainstage show – MATILDA.  In addition to performing, acting interns assist in our theatre education programs. Actors may also participate in running crew, box office, load-in/strike and marketing during the season. (8 weeks, June 9 – July 31)

Directing/Education (1)
The directing/education intern will work with and assist the director with the main stage musical. The directing/ education intern also works with the artistic director and education director assisting with our education programs (DramaRamas, High School Theatre Intensive, and the middle school Jr. Company).  (7 weeks June 9 – July 31)

Music Directing  (1)
It is essential that our music directing intern be able to play the piano. The music directing intern will assist our Musical director on our main stage productions, music direct in our educational programs. Also the music directing intern may assist on shows with sound & audio design.  (7 weeks June 09 – July 31)

Stage Management (3)
Stage manager interns work closely with our production stage managers on the main stage production and education programs. (7 weeks, June 9 – July 31)

Costumes/Wardrobe  (2)
We will accept 2 costumes/wardrobe interns. These interns will assist the costume designer/supervisor pulling, measuring, building, fitting, altering and maintaining costumes and wigs for all of our shows. The costume/wardrobe interns will also have run crew responsibilities. These interns must have experience in costume shop stitching as well as costume construction. (7 weeks, June 9 – July 31)

Technical Theatre  (5)
Depending on the intern’s technical experience may be assigned to a specific department or as an all around-stage hand:(Carpentry, Electrical/Lighting, Sound, Technical Direction, Properties)
Technical interns work closely with our production manager, technical director, designers and stagehands and have run positions for all shows. (5 Weeks, June 24 – July 31)

Theatre Administration (3)
(Marketing/Social Media, Company Management, Box Office, House Management)
Administrative interns work with the company manager, office manager and administrative staff. They will split their time between box office & house management, concession management, social marketing and traditional marketing duties. (9 Weeks May 27 – July 31)

Schedule

Interns generally spend about 75% of their time in their chosen career track and will participate in other tracks as opportunities, interests, and schedules dictate. The program has a rolling start determined by disciplines. All Internships run through July 31. Interns typically are engaged 6 days per week.  Daily schedules will fluctuate with assignments.

How to Apply

All applicants must first register online. 
 
Non-acting interns must submit a cover letter, headshot, resume, and a letter of recommendation.
 
Acting Interns must submit a cover letter, headshot, and resume.  Additionally, actors must submit videos with online links.  Videos need to include: 2 singing cuts (upbeat & ballad), a short monologue, and musical-theater dance/movement cut(s). Applicants must have strong dancing skills.  A letter of recommendation will be requested if the intern is being considered for advancement.

We will not review your documents until all materials have been submitted.  
 
Final applicants will have an online interview. Non-acting internships are accepted on a rolling basis. Acting internships may be accepted on a rolling basis or accepted during casting in April.

Acting interns:
Actors being considered for parts this season will be contacted, interviewed and possibly asked to submit additional video or if convenient attend our NYC or CT auditions.  Applicants not being considered for this season will also be notified via email.
