Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical – OPEN CALL – Children’s Ensemble – March 28, 2026
The Summer Theatre of New Canaan will hold auditions for local non-Equity children on Saturday, March 28th from 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM at the Performing Arts Conservatory of New Canaan studios located at 70 Pine St. New Canaan, CT. Please prepare the provided materials below. This production will be presented under a Letter of Agreement with the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Actors’ Equity Association performers will be seen at a scheduled Equity Principal Audition (EPA).
March 28 Audition Schedule:
11:30AM – 12:30PM – All learn/review the dance
12:30PM – 1:00PM – All review the music
1:00PM – 2:30PM – Individual Singing (Children will be released on a rolling basis after they present their songs for the casting team)
All children should be prepared to arrive at 11:30AM and stay thru 2:30PM. If you need to leave prior to 2:30PM please notify the monitor upon arrival.

Children must be available for the rehearsal and performance schedule of the production.
CHILD CASTING BREAKDOWN:
MATILDA: A brilliant and imaginative girl (8–11 and ideally 4’4 or under) with exceptional intelligence and quiet strength; she anchors the show and requires a highly skilled young actor with emotional depth, strong comedic instincts, and stamina. Vocal range A3–D5 with confident belt; strong mover with excellent diction and storytelling ability. Role may be double cast.
BRUCE: 8-10, Matilda’s classmate. Strong singer (featured soloist). Must be comfortable eating onstage.
LAVENDER: 8-10, Matilda’s classmate and friend.
CHILDREN’S ENSEMBLE: Matilda’s classmates. Children should read as elementary school age (7-12). Various singing, dancing, and speaking roles. Strong dancing and singing skills are need by all.
What to Prepare
All children will be asked to perform the provided dance and song. The dance and music will be taught/reviewed on the day of the audition, but children are encouraged to review all materials in advance. It will be particularly important to be comfortable with the song/lyrics as all children will be asked to sing the song by themselves.
