The Summer Theatre of New Canaan will hold Equity Principal Auditions / Equity Chorus Call on Monday, April 6th from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (UPDATED TIME) at the Performing Arts Conservatory of New Canaan studios located at 70 Pine St. New Canaan, CT. Local non-Equity talent is welcome to attend.

BREAKDOWN:

MATILDA: A brilliant and imaginative girl (8–11 and ideally 4’4 or under) with exceptional intelligence and quiet strength; she anchors the show and requires a highly skilled young actor with emotional depth, strong comedic instincts, and stamina. Vocal range A3–D5 with confident belt; strong mover with excellent diction and storytelling ability. Role may be double cast.

BRUCE: 8-10, Matilda’s classmate. Strong singer (featured soloist). Must be comfortable eating onstage.

LAVENDER: 8 -10, Matilda’s classmate and friend.

MISS AGATHA TRUNCHBULL: The tyrannical, larger-than-life headmistress (35–55), traditionally played by a male actor but flexible depending on production vision. Requires commanding physical presence, bold character work, strong belt (A2–G4), and fearless comic commitment. Must balance menace with heightened theatricality.

MISS HONEY: A gentle, kind-hearted teacher (20s–30s) with emotional vulnerability and inner resilience. Requires warm lyrical soprano (F3–D5), sincere acting depth, and grounded stillness; “My House” is the emotional centerpiece.

MR WORMWOOD: Matilda’s brash and dishonest used-car salesman father (30s–40s) with big physical comedy and fast-paced delivery. Vocal range C3–A4; strong comedic timing and character singing required. Energetic mover with vaudeville-style flair.

MRS WORMWOOD: A flamboyant, image-obsessed amateur ballroom dancer (20s–40s) who prioritizes dance and appearance over parenting. Requires strong belt (A3–F5) and confident ballroom/Latin dance ability. Bold comedic instincts and heightened physicality essential.

MRS PHELPS: Warm and grounded librarian (20s-40s) who frames Matilda’s storytelling sequences. Strong character actress with clear diction and gentle presence. Serves as emotional bridge between fantasy and reality.

RUDOLPHO: Mrs. Wormwood’s flamboyant dance partner (20s–30s) with strong Latin/ballroom technique and comedic presence. Vocal range D3–A4; featured in “Loud.” Must be athletic, charismatic, and comfortable with stylized character work.

THE ESCAPOLOGIST: 20s-40s, high lyric baritone. He is the headlining Escape Artist in the circus. He’s a showman. In life he is the strong and sensitive type -a loving parental figure. Married and very much in love with the Acrobat. Dancer or trained Acrobat skilled preferred.

THE ACROBAT: She is a graceful, lyrical character within Matilda’s fantasy world; strong mover with expressive acting skills. Requires physical storytelling and emotional warmth. Aerial skills a plus.

SERGEI: 30-50s, Bulgarian mob boss who seeks revenge on Mr. Wormwood; ideally over 6’ tall with an imposing figure

MALE IDENTIFIED ADULT ENSEMBLE
Adult ensemble members. 20s-40s. Strong dancers and singers to play various roles in the ensemble including Sergei, Doctor, Big Kids, Henchmen, Parents, etc. Tumbling and aerial skills a plus.

How to Submit

Equity members may email casting@stonc.org to request an appointment. Please provide a window of availability and we will follow-up to confirm. Only Equity members may request appointments.

WALK-INS: You are welcome to attend even if you don’t request a time slot. The doors will open starting 30 minutes prior to the schedule audition start time. Walk-ins are welcome, and we will do our best to see all who attend.

NON-UNION: Local non-Equity performers are encouraged to attend as walk-ins. We will see you throughout the day as time allows. If all people are not seen by the end of the published audition time, casting will stay as late as 6PM to see those who are present.

What to Prepare

Please prepare a brief song in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided.

Please bring a headshot and resume stapled together.
